Despite stepping down in 1968, Trippe remained on the board of directors, in a non-executive capacity. In the 1920's the continuing race for height pitted the Chrysler Building, at the northeast corner of 42d Street and Lexington Avenue, against the Bank of Manhattan Building at 40 Wall Street, a race won by the Chrysler, which secretly assembled a 175-foot spire inside, then suddenly lifted it out in the fall of 1929 to bring the building to 1,046 feet, as opposed to the bank's 921.
